Kabaddi is one of the oldest team sports still played and one of the very few that requires no equipment at all: a marked court, two teams, and a player who has to cross into enemy territory and return without being caught. For most of its history it was a village game. Then a professional league launched in 2014, put it on television with franchise teams and a season structure, and turned its best players into recognisable athletes with nicknames and transfer fees. A player enters the opposing half, tries to touch defenders, and must get back across the line to score. The defenders try to stop them returning. That is the entire game, alternating between the two sides.
Because the structure is so simple, the terminology is small and precise. Each phase of that action has an official name, and those names are what most of the rules questions ask about.
There are several ways to score and they are worth different amounts. Touching defenders, crossing a marked line in the opponents' half, and eliminating an entire opposing side all carry different values, and the last one has a specific name that is among the most used terms in commentary.

Launched in the mid-2010s with city-based franchises, the league brought television money, structured seasons and genuine celebrity to a sport that had almost none of it. Its teams have distinctive names, several built around a city plus an animal.
