GTA 6 Preview: We Know What It Costs. We Still Have Not Seen It Played.

Rockstar has revealed an enormous amount about Grand Theft Auto 6 — price, map, cast, features — almost all of it through shop listings rather than gameplay. Here is what is confirmed, what is retailer copy, and what is still a guess.

Preview — Not A Final Review

This game has not released yet. Everything here is based on official material and reported impressions rather than our own hands-on play.

An Enormous Amount of Information, and None of It Is Gameplay

Something strange has happened with Grand Theft Auto 6. Over the past few weeks Rockstar has released more concrete detail about this game than in the whole time since it was announced. We now know what it costs, what comes in each edition, which tattoo parlour is locked behind the expensive one, the model names of both protagonists' pistols, and the biography of a drug runner's third wife.

What we have not seen is anyone play it. Not once. There has been no raw gameplay showing systems, mechanics, or how a mission actually unfolds. Rockstar maintains that its trailers contain gameplay, and in a technical sense that is true, but nobody has watched a firefight play out or seen a heads-up display or been told a frame rate.

So we know the name of Lucia's gun and not what happens when she fires it. That is a genuinely unusual position for the biggest release in the history of the medium to be in with four months to go, and it is the honest frame for this entire article. Almost everything below comes from storefront copy rather than from watching the game work.

This matters for a practical reason. Shop listings are written to sell things. They are not lies, but they are marketing, and the level of confidence you should place in a sentence depends heavily on where that sentence came from. So rather than pile it all together as though it carried equal weight, we have sorted it.

Vice City returns for the first time since 2002, this time as one region of a much larger state rather than the whole map.

What We Know, Ranked by How Much We Trust It

#1

Stated by Rockstar directly

The 19 November date. The $80 and $100 pricing. The state of Leonida with Vice City at its centre. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as the two protagonists, with full official biographies for them and the supporting cast. PS5 and Xbox Series only. Treat all of this as fact.

#2

Visible in official trailers and screenshots

Jason leaning fully out of a car window to shoot rather than sticking an arm out. Lucia's hair moving realistically in wind, which is a visible upgrade over the first trailer. Jason fishing with Cal Hampton. Tennis courts, basketball courts, a mini golf course, pool tables in bars. You can see these things, so they exist in some form.

#3

Described in official edition listings

Story chapters in the Red Dead 2 style. A vehicle weapons locker and a place to deposit stolen goods for fencing. Engraved personalised pistols. Raiding gang compounds as a side activity. This is Rockstar's own copy, so the features are real, but the wording is promotional and the detail is thin.

#4

Strongly implied but not stated

Fishing as a full system, based on a boat description mentioning casting and reeling in catches of all sorts, plus that screenshot. Purchasable apartments in single player, based on residences with private parking garages. A hair growth system working like Red Dead 2's, based on comparison shots. Reasonable inferences, not confirmations.

#5

Retailer copy that has since been deleted

Social media integration through the in-game phone with viral videos and influencers. NPCs with daily routines and random events. Seamless real-time switching between the two leads. Advanced ray tracing and global illumination. This came from Brazilian retailer listings that were quietly removed afterwards. Interesting, plausible, and not something to rely on.

This Is Red Dead Redemption 2 Wearing Grand Theft Auto's Clothes

Read through everything Rockstar has described and a clear pattern emerges. Nearly every mechanical idea in GTA 6 is a system from Red Dead Redemption 2, moved forward a hundred and fifty years.

The story is split into chapters, which is how Red Dead 2 was structured and specifically not how GTA 5 worked. Weapons are customised with engravings and personalised finishes, exactly as Arthur Morgan's were. Hair grows out gradually as you play and can then be cut to whatever length you have earned, rather than instantly changing at a barber. Fishing appears to be a genuine activity rather than a novelty.

The most consequential of these is the weapons locker. In Red Dead 2 your arsenal lived on your horse, and you carried only what you chose to take with you. GTA 6's vehicles are described as having a weapons locker and a place to stash stolen goods for fencing. If that means what it appears to mean, your car becomes your horse, and the days of carrying nine firearms on your person at all times are over.

That was the single most divisive thing about Red Dead 2. Some players found it immersive and deliberate; plenty found it a constant irritation. Importing it into a faster, more chaotic game where you routinely lose your vehicle to police, water or a lamp post is a much bigger design gamble than it sounds. We would put this near the top of the list of things to watch when reviews land.

The open boot of a classic car at night, fitted out as a weapons locker with firearms racked inside and a bag of stolen goods beside them.
Your car becomes your horse. It was the most divisive system in Red Dead 2, and it is arriving in a much faster game where you routinely lose your vehicle.

The Map: Where You Will Actually Be Going

🎮 Vice City

The Miami stand-in and the centre of the map, returning for the first time since 2002. This is where the neon, the beaches and the nightlife live.

🎮 Grass Rivers

The Everglades equivalent. Swampland, airboats, and presumably a great deal of wildlife that would prefer you were not there.

🎮 Leonida Keys

The Florida Keys. Where Jason has been working for local drug runners, and long rumoured to include a military base.

🎮 Port Gellhorn

A separate settlement away from Vice City proper. Little is known beyond the name and its presence on the official list.

🎮 Ambrosia

Another confirmed region with essentially nothing attached to it yet. One of the more intriguing blanks on the board.

🎮 Mount Kalaga National Park

Forested high ground, which looks far more like Georgia than Florida. Fuel for the persistent theory that the map reaches beyond a single state, though Rockstar has not said so.

The Cast Is Doing More Work Than Usual

Rockstar has published biographies for the supporting cast, which is unusual this far out and suggests the writing is carrying more weight here than in previous entries.

Jason Duval grew up around grifters, did a stint in the army trying to escape a troubled adolescence, and ended up in the Keys working for drug runners anyway. He lives rent-free in a property belonging to Brian, an old smuggler still moving product through his boatyard with his third wife Lori, on the understanding that Jason helps with local shakedowns. That arrangement is almost certainly where the game begins.

Lucia Caminos was taught to fight by her father before she could properly walk, and defending her family is what put her in Leonida Penitentiary. Trailer two shows her being released. The likely structure, then, is that you start as Jason, collect Lucia, and the pair become switchable from there.

Around them sits a network that looks built for entanglement rather than decoration: Boobie Ike, who converted a street reputation into real estate, a strip club and a recording studio; Dre'Quan Priest, a hustler trying to break into music; the rap duo Real Dimes; Raul Bautista, a career bank robber recruiting for jobs; and Cal Hampton, Jason's friend, who listens to Coast Guard radio at home with a few beers. Lucia appears behind Bautista in one shot, which may be the robbery that put her away.

The Delay That Rearranged Everybody Else's Year

Trailer two dated this game for 26 May 2026. It is now 19 November 2026, a slip of roughly six months, and the consequences of that reach far beyond Rockstar.

Every other publisher had built its calendar around a GTA 6 that arrived in spring. Move it to late November and the second half of the year becomes unusable, because nothing survives being released next to it. The result is the traffic jam we are now living through: a dozen significant games crushed into September and October, several of them on the same two days, all of them running from a date that used to be somebody else's problem.

Whether 19 November holds is the open question. Rockstar has given no indication of another change and has been firm on it publicly. But a game of this size would normally have a much louder campaign running by now, and we still have not seen real gameplay. A degree of scepticism is reasonable, and plenty of people in the industry are quietly holding some.

One more thing worth noting: there is no PC version announced. Rockstar has historically brought its games to PC a year or more after console release, and nothing so far suggests this will be different.

The Physical Edition Has No Disc

If you buy GTA 6 physically, you are buying a case containing a download code. There is no disc in it. That means the game cannot be resold, lent, or played without an internet connection to download it first, and a gift-wrapped copy is functionally a printed voucher. The one upside is that both physical and digital buyers can preload from 12 November, a week ahead of launch, which for a game likely to run to a couple of hundred gigabytes is not nothing.

A physical copy is a case with a printed code in it. No resale, no lending, and no way to install without downloading the whole thing first.

Preview — Based on Pre-Release Material

The most detailed picture we have ever had of an unreleased Rockstar game, assembled almost entirely from price tags rather than gameplay, which is its own kind of warning sign.

This game has not released yet. Everything here is based on official material and reported impressions rather than our own hands-on play.

What Works

  • The regional variety looks genuine, spanning city, swamp, keys, small towns and forested high ground rather than one urban sprawl.
  • Red Dead 2's systems arriving in a modern setting is a real evolution rather than GTA 5 with better lighting.
  • Published biographies for the whole supporting cast suggest unusual confidence in the writing.
  • Single-player appears to get the property and vehicle customisation that GTA 5 reserved for its online mode.
  • Visible technical progress between the first and second trailers, particularly in animation and hair.

What Concerns Us

  • No raw gameplay has been shown at all, four months out, which is genuinely odd for a release of this scale.
  • The vehicle weapons locker imports the most divisive system in Red Dead 2 into a much faster game.
  • Meaningful content is locked behind a $100 edition, including entire shops and two side missions.
  • Physical copies contain no disc, so there is no resale, no lending, and no offline install.
  • Performance has never been specified. The strongest claim anywhere is more stable frame rates on PS5 Pro, which is not a number.

Who It's For

Practically everyone, and pretending otherwise would be silly. If you have any history with this series, you have already decided. The useful question is not whether to buy it but which edition, and on that our answer is the standard one unless you specifically want the extra shops.

Who Should Wait

PC players, who have nothing to buy yet and should not expect to for some time. Anyone who buys physically to resell or lend. And anyone allergic to inventory management, who should wait and find out exactly how the weapons locker works before committing.

How We Researched This Article

This game has not released and nobody outside Rockstar has played it. This article is a preview, not a review. It draws on Rockstar's own character and edition descriptions, published trailers and screenshots, storefront listings, and community analysis of that material. We have deliberately ranked our confidence in each claim rather than presenting everything as equally solid, because a significant portion of what is currently circulating as GTA 6 news originates from retailer product copy, some of which was subsequently removed from those listings. Where something comes from that removed copy we have said so explicitly and treated it as unverified. No performance figures have been confirmed by Rockstar. We will update this article as real gameplay is shown and again once the finished game is available. The artwork on this page is our own original illustration made to accompany the writing. It is not footage or promotional art from the game.
