Sprint down the flank of an erupting volcano across a river of lava. Every footstep cools the lava under you into a plate of rock for a moment, so you are always running on ground you have only just made. Keep your pace up and the plates hold; slow down and they barely set, and stand still and your weight presses them under. Switch between three lanes, jump magma channels, slide under rock arches, dodge basalt pillars and lava bombs, time your way past steam vents and race over stone bridges before they crumble, all while the eruption rolls down the slope behind you. Collect ember gems for extra points and grab Frost Boots or a Cinder Shield to help you along. Your score is the distance you run plus the gems you collect.

Genre: Endless Runner

Difficulty: Easy to start, then faster, busier and with shorter-lived footholds the further you run

About Lavastride

Running on rock you make

How long a plate holds depends on how fast you were going when you stepped on it: a light, quick step sets it for longest, and a slow, heavy one hardly at all. So your speed is not only about outrunning the eruption, it is what keeps you standing.

Natural crust slabs, the rock round each steam vent and standing bridges never melt. They are the only places where you can safely stop.

Power-ups

Frost Boots last 10 seconds. While you wear them, your plates set icy blue, stay solid 1.8 times longer and are pressed under half as fast when you stand on them.

The Cinder Shield glows round you until it takes one hit. It absorbs a single stumble or a lava bomb that would have ended the run, then you get a second of grace while you flicker. A bomb it takes is smothered and leaves no pool.

The first power-up appears about 200 m into a run, then another every few hundred metres, always in a clear stretch between hazards.

Near misses

Get out of a pillar's lane at the last moment, slide under an arch or jump a channel right at its edge, run past a vent just before it blows, step off a bridge as it falls or have a bomb land just beside you, and the game calls it out: CLOSE CALL, LATE DODGE, LAST SECOND or JUST MADE IT. The world slows for a moment, the screen flashes gold, and near misses close together count up as a chain.

Near misses are for the thrill only. They do not change your score.

How it gets harder

Your top speed rises the further you run, and over the first 3,000 m the course ramps up: hazards come closer together, combinations of hazards appear, more lava bombs fall, and the lava cools a little quicker under your feet, so your plates last only about two thirds as long by the end.

Every run is a new course, laid out in patterns that always leave a way through. Lava bombs never close all three lanes at once, and they never land on a bridge, a pillar, an arch, a vent or a channel you are already dealing with.

The volcano

The run is a real descent: the slope steepens into drops and eases onto shelves, the lava chute bends from side to side, and over each crest the valley opens up far below, with other volcanoes on the horizon. The eruption's plume rolls overhead, lit from below and flickering with volcanic lightning, and the eruption's front surges up from the bottom of the screen as it closes in.

What the game keeps

Your best score, your screen shake and sound settings, and how many runs you have played (so the control hints only show on your first couple of runs) are saved on Unihfy Games in this browser.

How to Play

  • Hold run on the title screen to start. You begin on a stretch of natural crust, which is always safe, and the lava river starts a few metres further down the slope.
  • Keep holding to run. Each footstep cools the lava under it into a rock plate that lasts about a second at full speed, long enough to carry you to the next step. Slow steps barely set the lava, so the plates melt sooner. Let go and you slow to a stop, and below about half speed your weight presses the plate under you, so it melts faster still.
  • If the ground under you melts, the screen edges glow red and you start to sink. Get moving again, or reach crust or a bridge, within half a second or the lava swallows you.
  • Read the river ahead. Jump the magma channels that cross the whole river, and change lane round the ones that run down a single lane. Change lane past basalt pillars: running into one head-on ends the run, and clipping one makes you stumble. Slide under rock arches, or you will stumble into them.
  • Steam vents blow on a timer. Each one hisses and its mouth brightens for a moment before it blasts, and a blast knocks you into the air and makes you stumble. Stone bridges are the only way over the widest channels, and they crumble soon after you first step on them, so cross at full pace.
  • The eruption follows you down the slope at a steady speed, a little slower than your top speed. Run flat out and you pull away from it; slow down or stumble and it gains, and each stumble lets it surge 7 m closer. The ERUPTION gauge at the top of the screen shows how close it is. If it catches you, the run is over.
  • Lava bombs are thrown ahead of you. A glowing ring marks where each one will land, with a second ring closing in as it comes down. Be out of the ring, or high in a jump, when it lands. A bomb leaves a molten pool on the river for a couple of seconds.
  • Collect ember gems along the way: each one adds 10 to your score. Your score is the metres you have run plus 10 for every gem, and your best is kept.

FAQs

What is the goal in Lavastride?

Run as far down the volcano as you can. Your score is the metres you run plus 10 points for every ember gem you collect. The run ends if you sink into the lava, fall into a magma channel, run into a pillar, are hit by a lava bomb or are caught by the eruption.

Why did I sink?

The plate under you melted. Plates only last about a second at full speed, and much less if you were moving slowly when you stepped on them. Standing still on one presses it under even faster. Keep holding run, or stop only on natural crust or a bridge.

Why doesn't the runner move on its own?

Running is held, not automatic: hold W, the Up arrow or a finger on the screen to run, and let go to slow down. Your pace matters, because faster steps make plates that last longer, and the eruption gains on you whenever you slow down.

How do I change lanes on a phone?

Keep one finger on the screen to run and swipe left or right with it. Each swipe moves you one lane, however hard you swipe. To move two lanes, swipe, pause for a moment and swipe again. Swipe up to jump and down to slide.

What is the gauge at the top of the screen?

The ERUPTION gauge shows how close the eruption front is: it fills towards the runner as the eruption gains and flashes red when it is close. Run at full pace to pull away from it.

How do I avoid lava bombs?

Watch for the glowing ring on the river ahead. The bomb lands in the middle of it when the inner ring closes. Change lane out of the ring, or jump just before it lands.

What do the power-ups do?

Frost Boots make your plates last 1.8 times longer for 10 seconds. The Cinder Shield takes one stumble or one lava bomb hit for you, then gives you a second of grace.

Do near misses give extra points?

No. Near misses are called out with a moment of slow motion and a gold flash, but your score is only distance and gems.

How do I pause or change the settings?

Press Esc or P, or tap the pause button at the top right. The pause screen shows your run so far and has Resume, Settings and Menu. On the title screen, the gear button at the top right opens the same settings for screen shake and sound.

Is my best score saved?

Yes. Your best score and settings are kept in this browser on Unihfy Games, and a NEW BEST stamp shows on the game over screen when you beat it. Clearing your browser data removes them.
