Play Windwhisker • Free

A little wind-up toy mouse on a big kitchen floor, seen from above. Hold to wind the key on its back, aim, and let go: it darts off in a straight line until its spring runs down, and you can't steer it once it's running. Bounce it off walls and table legs, pick up every crumb, and get it home to the mouse hole in the skirting without being caught by mousetraps, rolling marbles, the mop or the cat. Thirty-two levels across four rooms, and every one was played through with the game's own physics to prove it can be finished in par.

Genre: Action

Difficulty: Hard, and harder still for three stars

About Windwhisker

Thirty-two levels in four rooms

The levels are grouped into The Kitchen Floor, Traps and Paws, Wet Floor and The Sleeping Cat, eight in each. The Kitchen Floor teaches winding, aiming and bouncing round cupboards and under tables. Traps and Paws adds mousetraps and the cat's paw. Wet Floor brings in slippery puddles, rolling marbles and the mop. The Sleeping Cat adds cats you must not wake, and mixes everything together.

Clearing a level unlocks the next. The first level that brings in each new idea opens with a short tip, and the level select shows your stars and fewest dashes against par on every level.

Every par was earned by a planner

Each level was played through by a planner that uses the game's own physics, trying dashes in every direction and waiting for moving hazards where it helped. Its run was replayed from scratch to check that it picks up every crumb and reaches the hole without being caught.

Par is exactly the number of dashes the planner needed, with no extra allowance, so three stars on a level takes the same precision. Some levels are very hard, and that is on purpose.

Reading the floor

Every danger shows before it catches you. A sleeping cat has a faint ring around it that glows as you get close, and it purrs louder too. The cat's paw casts a shadow that follows the mouse, then holds still for a moment just before it strikes, so a mouse that keeps moving can slip out from under it. Before the mop comes, the band it will sweep glows and arrows at the edge show which end it's coming from, and marbles roll back and forth on a steady beat.

When something catches the mouse, a short message says what it was and where the mouse is going back to.

Your mouse

Stars unlock nine more styles for your mouse, from brass and mint to calico, midnight, rainbow and gold. Choose one on the Mouse screen.

How to Play

  • Press and hold to wind the key on the mouse's back. The longer you hold, the further it will run: a ring fills around the mouse and a dotted path grows ahead of it, showing exactly where it will go, bounces included.
  • Aim by dragging or with the arrow keys, then let go. The mouse darts off in a straight line and slows to a stop as its spring runs down. You can't steer it while it runs, so every dash has to be planned before you let go.
  • Walls, furniture legs, cupboards and crates bounce the mouse off like a ball, and each bounce costs a little of the run that's left. It runs straight under tables, chairs and stools, but not through their legs. On a puddle the spring runs down slowly, so it slides further than you'd expect.
  • Mousetraps, rolling marbles, the mop and the cat's paw all catch the mouse, and so does running too close to a sleeping cat. A caught mouse goes back to where it last stopped (or to the start, on some levels), the crumbs from that dash go back on the floor, and the dashes you used still count.
  • Reach the glowing mouse hole to finish. You get one star for getting home, one for picking up every crumb on the way, and one for using par dashes or fewer. You can restart a level at any time.

FAQs

How do I move the mouse?

Press and hold to wind its key, aim, then let go. It runs in a straight line until its spring runs down. You can't steer it while it runs, so plan each dash before you let go.

How far will the mouse go?

As far as the dotted path shows. The path grows while you hold and follows every bounce off walls and legs, so you can see where the mouse will stop before you let go. Puddles make it slide further.

What happens when the mouse gets caught?

It tumbles, then goes back to where it last stopped, or to the start on levels that say so. Any crumbs it picked up on that dash go back on the floor, and the dashes you've used still count.

How do I get past the cat's paw?

Watch its shadow. It follows the mouse, then stops for a moment just before the paw comes down. Dash out from under it as soon as it stops, or time your dash for when the paw is resting.

How are stars worked out?

One star for reaching the mouse hole, one for picking up every crumb on the level, and one for using par dashes or fewer. Par is the number of dashes a planner needed with the game's own physics.

Why is it so hard?

Par is exactly what the planner needed, with nothing to spare, and getting caught costs you dashes. Getting home is usually manageable; three stars on the later levels takes careful planning and good timing.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes, in portrait or landscape. When you hold your phone upright, the kitchen floor turns to fill the screen. On a computer it works in any window size, with mouse or keyboard.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your stars, fewest dashes, mouse style and sound setting are kept in this browser on Unihfy Games. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Who made Windwhisker?

Windwhisker was designed and built in-house at Unihfy Games by Kaushik Hirpara. Its code, art and sound are all original, and everything you see and hear is generated by the game itself.
