Tink is a small treaded robot with a glowing magnet core, fighting waves of junk robots in a junkyard arena at sunset. Every robot you wreck bursts into scrap, and the scrap flies to Tink and whirls round it as a spinning shield. Hold to pull the ring in tight and spin it faster, then let go to blast every piece outward at once: the bigger the ring and the longer the pull, the harder the blast. Fight Bolters, Spitters, Tuskers and Snatchers across four arenas full of crushers, conveyor belts, swinging hooks and magnet pads, beat Junkjaw the compactor truck every fifth wave, and spend your coins in the garage on nine parts that change how Tink fights. The robots are cartoon machines, and there are no people and no blood anywhere in the game.

Genre: Action

Difficulty: Easy to start in the first arena, then tougher robots, harsher machinery and a boss that comes back stronger every fifth wave

About Scrapwhirl

A ring of scrap that's your shield and your weapon

Everything in Scrapwhirl comes back to the ring. Each piece you catch whirls round Tink in its own slot, lagging and wobbling as you drive. While you hold the magnet, the ring squeezes in and spins faster, and its reach for loose scrap grows. When you let go, every piece flies outward with a little of the whirl's swing, so the blast fans round. A blast at full charge from a full ring is the biggest hit in the game.

That makes every blast a choice. Blasting empties the ring, so Tink is open to shots and rams until it fills again. Holding on keeps you safe but slows you down. The wreckage of every robot you hit becomes the next ring.

The robots

Bolters are one-wheeled balls that roll straight at Tink, weaving a little, and ram. Spitters are tripod turrets that keep their distance, plant their feet, glow and fire pink plasma; later on they fire three shots at once. Your ring blocks the shots, and flying scrap swats them out of the air.

Tuskers are bulldozers. One trundles closer, revs while an arrow on the floor shows where it will go, then charges in a straight line. Step aside and let it crash into a wall or a prop: a dazed Tusker takes double damage. Snatchers are hover drones with magnets of their own. They circle just outside your ring and pull pieces out of it, and wrecking one drops everything it took.

The first wave that brings in a new kind of robot says what it does in its banner.

Junkjaw

Junkjaw is a huge gunmetal compactor truck with a hopper of junk on its back and a jaw full of teeth. It trundles after Tink and takes turns between a charge, spitting cubes of compacted scrap that hop about the arena, and a bite when Tink gets close. The bite knocks pieces out of your ring. Cubes hurt Tink, but your ring or a blast smashes them into scrap to catch.

Below half health it goes mad: it moves faster, spits three cubes at a time, and a few robots drop in to help. Each time it comes back in the same run it has more health. Wrecking it pays a big score bonus, extra coins, three gold nuts and two battery cells.

Four arenas and their machinery

The Sunset Scrapyard has conveyor belts that carry Tink, robots and scrap along, and a magnet pad that drags everything in, then pops and fires the scrap it gathered back out. The Tyre Pit has two crane hooks swinging across it and two magnet pads; a hook smashes robots out of its way and stops a charging robot dead. The Cinder Foundry has four crushers fed by belts. A crusher shudders and its lamp blinks before it slams, and anything under it is wrecked outright, so lure robots under. The Rust Dock mixes belts, a crane hook and crushers.

None of the machinery picks a side. It hurts Tink as readily as the robots, so the trick is to make it work for you. Each arena explains its machinery in a banner the first time you go in.

Each arena counts its own waves from one, but the later ones start harder. Clearing ten waves in one arena (in a single run) opens the next gate in the yard, and the gate's plate shows your best score there.

Coins and the garage

Clearing a wave pays coins, more for later waves and later arenas, with a bonus for beating Junkjaw. Now and then a wrecked robot drops a gold nut that twinkles on the floor: catch it in your ring for five coins. Coins are banked the moment you earn them, so even a run that ends early keeps them. At the end of each wave, the scrap lying about hops over to Tink.

The garage is the shed in the corner of the yard. Hold the magnet in front of it to roll the shutter up. Inside, Tink stands on a turntable under three hydraulic arms, one for each slot: the top, the body and the drive. Pick an arm, have it swap to another part, and hold the magnet to pull the part onto Tink. Buying and fitting are the same pull, and the part Tink had goes back up onto the arm.

On top, the Coil Crown reaches further and holds 32 pieces instead of 24, the Scrap Cannon fires every blast forward in a cone and hits harder, and the Quick Spark charges almost twice as fast. For the body, the Bolt Plate adds a sixth battery cell, the Spike Skirt hurts Bolters that ram you, and the Clamp Shell stops Snatchers stealing and spills fewer pieces when Tink is hit. For the drive, Turbo Treads are faster and don't slow down while pulling, Spring Hop makes a full-charge blast jump so that the landing stuns the robots round Tink, and Grip Treads hold Tink still on belts and pads and halve the damage from crushers. Every part shows on Tink.

Robots and scrap, not people

Everything you fight in Scrapwhirl is a cartoon robot or a piece of machinery in a junkyard. There are no people, animals or blood in the game. A wrecked robot bursts into bolts, gears, plates and sparks.

Sound and what the game keeps

All the sound is made in code: the motor and the magnet's whine, the clink of every piece of scrap, each robot's moves, the machinery, and junkyard synth music that changes with the yard, each arena and Junkjaw. The M key or the button on the pause card turns it off, and the game follows the site's mute as well.

Your best score and waves cleared in each arena, your coins, the parts you own, the parts Tink wears and your sound setting are saved on Unihfy Games in this browser. Your score here is your best single run.

How to Play

  • The game starts in the yard. Each arena has a gate along the far wall, with a little picture of the arena on a billboard above it. Drive up to an open gate and hold the magnet: the doors bulge and shudder, and at full pull they tear off and Tink drives through.
  • Drive over scrap to pick it up. Every piece joins the ring whirling round Tink. The ring is a shield as well as your weapon: it grinds robots that run into it and blocks plasma shots, although each hit knocks a piece loose.
  • Hold to pull. The ring tightens and spins faster, Tink slows down, and loose scrap further away is dragged in. Let go to blast the whole ring outward. The longer you held, the faster and harder the pieces fly, and the ring flashes when it's full.
  • Robots drop in wave after wave, each one after a warning on the floor. Wreck them and they burst into more scrap for the ring, so a good fight feeds itself. Wreck several in quick succession for a combo that multiplies their points.
  • Tink has five battery cells. Rams, shots, bites and machinery each take one or more, and Tink flickers safe for a moment after a hit. Wrecked robots sometimes drop a battery cell to win one back. When the last cell is gone, the run ends on the results card.
  • Every fifth wave of an arena, Junkjaw the compactor truck comes instead. Its armour soaks most of every hit, so make it crash into a wall, a prop, a swinging hook or a crusher. That dazes it and knocks the armour off, and while its pink core shows, every hit does full damage.

FAQs

How do I attack?

Your scrap ring is your weapon. Robots that run into the spinning ring get ground and knocked back. To hit from further away, hold Space, a mouse button or the magnet button to pull the ring in, then let go to blast every piece outward. Longer holds blast harder.

Where does the scrap come from?

Every robot you wreck bursts into scrap. Drive over it, or hold the magnet to drag it in from further away. A few pieces lie about at the start of each run, and at the end of each wave the loose scrap hops over to you.

Why did my ring lose pieces?

Every hit Tink takes knocks a few pieces loose. Blocking a shot or grinding a robot costs the piece that did it, Junkjaw's bite knocks several off, and Snatchers pull pieces out with their magnets. Pick them back up, or wreck the Snatcher to get back what it took.

How do I beat Junkjaw?

Its armour soaks most of every hit. Get it to charge, then step aside so it crashes into a wall, a prop, a crusher or a swinging hook. That dazes it and knocks the armour off, and while its pink core shows (the boss bar flashes CORE OPEN!) every hit does full damage. Keep your ring between you and its bite, and smash its scrap cubes for more scrap.

How do Tuskers work?

A Tusker stops and revs while a pink arrow on the floor shows where it will charge. Step out of the line. If it hits a wall or a prop at the end of its charge it's dazed for a moment, and a dazed Tusker takes double damage.

How do I open the other arenas?

Reach and clear wave ten in one arena, in a single run, and the next arena's gate opens in the yard. Drive up to it and hold the magnet to rip the doors off. A locked gate is chained shut, and its prompt says which arena to clear.

How do I get coins?

Clearing a wave pays coins, more for later waves and in later arenas, and beating Junkjaw adds a bonus. Wrecked robots sometimes drop a gold nut worth five coins when your ring catches it. Coins are saved as soon as you earn them.

What do the parts do?

Tink has three slots. On top: the Coil Crown (more reach and a 32-piece ring), the Scrap Cannon (blasts fire forward in a cone, harder) and the Quick Spark (charges almost twice as fast). Body: the Bolt Plate (a sixth battery cell), the Spike Skirt (ramming Bolters get hurt) and the Clamp Shell (no stealing, fewer pieces spilled). Drive: Turbo Treads (faster), Spring Hop (a full-charge blast jumps and stuns robots where you land) and Grip Treads (belts and pads can't move you, crushers hurt less). Buy and fit them in the garage in the yard.

Does the machinery hurt robots too?

Yes, and that's the point. A crusher wrecks any robot under it, a swinging hook smashes robots aside and stops a charging one dead, belts carry robots about, and a magnet pad's pop fires scrap that hurts them. All of it hurts Tink as well, so watch the warnings.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Drag anywhere on the left half of the screen to drive, and hold the magnet button (or anywhere on the right half) to pull, then let go to blast. The pause button is at the top right, and the sound switch is on the pause card. On a computer, use WASD or the arrows and Space or the mouse.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your best scores and waves cleared, your coins, your parts and build, and your sound setting are kept in this browser on Unihfy Games. Clearing your browser data removes them.
