Play Tossload • Free

Race a little tomato-red pickup through the countryside, seen from behind in 3D, with a bed full of cargo: watermelons, chickens, balloons, jelly cubes, fish bowls and ice blocks. Every bump, log, pothole and ramp tosses your cargo into the air, a ring on the road shows where each piece will come down, and you steer, speed up and brake to get your bed underneath and catch it. Race three rival flatbed trucks over 24 levels on four routes, dodge the cargo they lose back at you, catch their pieces for a bonus, and finish with as much of your load as you can for up to three stars. Earn coins to spend in the barn garage on four upgrades and eight paint jobs, or go for the endless long haul. It's all cartoon: no people, no blood and no real brands.

Genre: Racing

Difficulty: Easy to start on Orchard Lane, then more kinds of cargo, more hurdles and quicker rivals on every route

About Tossload

Six kinds of cargo, six ways to fly

Watermelons are heavy: they hop low and fall fast. Balloons are tied to a little sandbag and rise slowly, then drift back towards the tailgate. Chickens flap from side to side across the lanes and come down slowly. Jelly cubes bounce off the bed floor once, so you have to catch them twice. Fish bowls spill water on every jolt, and the water they have left is what they are worth. Ice blocks slide about the bed and melt as you go, so they are worth less the longer you carry them.

Each kind has its own look and its own sound when it is tossed, caught or lost. The first levels bring in one kind at a time, and the later ones mix loads so you have to judge several flights at once.

Nine hurdles, and what each does to your load

Speed humps toss a piece or two. Logs lie across one or two lanes, slow you down and toss two pieces. Potholes come in clusters of two or three: a wheel drops in, the body tips that way and a piece is tossed to that side, so keep your wheels out of them. Ramps send the truck flying for bonus points, and the landing tosses one or two pieces. Mud slows the truck right down and loosens the steering.

Wind gusts blow across the whole road, throwing the lightest piece back and pushing the rest towards the tailgate. Road works leave one lane open between cones, and a knocked cone jolts the truck and tosses a piece. Brambles hang over the road from one side and low bridges leave a single high arch: both only appear while you are carrying balloons, because they pop or knock off the balloons.

Every hurdle except humps has a diamond sign beside the road well before it, and a warning banner with a little lane strip shows where the hurdle is and where your truck is. Hurdles are spaced so that every toss has come down before the next one.

Four routes and twenty-four levels

Orchard Lane has melons and chickens down gentle, rolling roads through apple orchards and red barns. Hilltop Loop brings balloons and fish bowls over steeper hills, with sheep and stone walls. Mill Valley has jelly and ice through wind and mud under turning windmills and hay bales. Market Run has mixed loads, every hurdle and quicker rivals, through villages with market stalls and bunting.

Each route has six levels with names like Melon Patch, Fishbowl Fair, Muddy Ford and Grand Market, getting longer and harder as they go: more kinds of cargo, more hurdles and quicker rivals. A level opens when you finish the one before it. The level select is a row of windmills: each route is a windmill with six sails, one per level, and a sunflower on a sail for every star you've won.

The long haul

Finish the last level of Orchard Lane and the weathervane at the end of the windmills opens the long haul: an endless road with no rivals and a mixed load. Every kilometre you pass a RESTOCK arch that drops in more cargo (up to a full bed) and scores bonus points, and the hurdles come closer together the further you go. The countryside changes route by route as you drive. The run ends when you are out of cargo, and the game keeps your best score and furthest distance.

Coins and the barn garage

Every run earns coins: a share of your score, plus ten for each star when you finish a level. Finish with every piece of your own load still in the bed for a perfect delivery and a bonus, which grows for each perfect finish in a row.

The garage is a barn with your truck on a lift. A pegboard holds four upgrades with three levels each. The Bigger Bed gives a wider catching area and room for more cargo after a restock. Soft Springs make bumps jolt your load less. Better Grip keeps the steering crisp on grass and in mud. The Net Rail adds a visible net along the bed sides that saves pieces landing just wide. Eight paint tins on the shelf change the colour of your truck, and what you fit shows on the truck in the garage and on the road.

A cartoon countryside

Everything in Tossload is a cartoon: the truck, the rival flatbeds, the farms, windmills, villages and animals. There are no people and no real brands, and nothing is hurt. Melons and jelly splat in bright colours, balloons pop, and a chicken that falls off the truck runs away unharmed.

Sound and what the game keeps

All the sound is made in code: the engine, wind, grass and mud, a different voice for each kind of cargo, a sound for every hurdle, and cheerful country-road music in a different key and tempo for each route. M or the speaker button turns it off, and the game follows the site's mute as well.

Your stars and best score on each level, your furthest long haul, your coins, upgrades and paint, your perfect-delivery streak, whether you have seen the first-level hints, and your sound setting are saved on Unihfy Games in this browser. The score you submit is your best single run.

How to Play

  • Your truck keeps rolling on its own. Steer between the three lanes, press the gas to speed up and the brake to slow down. Bends push the truck towards the outside, and you can drive onto the grass, but it is slower, bumpier and looser to steer.
  • Your load rides in the open bed behind the cab. When you hit a bump, a log, a pothole or a ramp, one or two pieces are tossed up into the air. A ring on the road shows where each piece is going to land, shrinking and darkening as it comes down. It turns green when your bed is under it.
  • Get your bed under the ring. Steer sideways, brake to let the piece land ahead of you, or give it gas to move forward under it. Every toss is checked before it flies, so a piece can always be reached in time. When the piece comes down inside the bed, you've caught it.
  • Catch pieces one after another for a combo that multiplies the points of every catch. Losing a piece, whether it smashes on the road, floats off or runs away, ends the combo. A catch right at the edge of the bed, or one the bed only just reached, is a big save, and time slows for a moment so you can enjoy it.
  • Three rival flatbed trucks, Bluebell, Clover and Peony, race you to the finish arch. When you are a little way behind a rival, it loses cargo back at you: catch a piece for bonus points and it joins your load, or steer clear. One that lands on your cab knocks a piece of yours loose.
  • Cross the line with as much of your load as you can. Your place, how much of your own cargo is still in the bed and your best combo decide your stars, from one to three. The run also ends if you run out of cargo before the line.

FAQs

How do I catch the cargo?

When a piece is tossed into the air, a ring on the road shows where it will land. Steer so the ring is over your truck bed, using the brake to let it land further ahead and the gas to move up under it. The ring turns green when the bed is under it, and a piece that comes down inside the bed is caught.

Why did my piece fall off the truck?

A piece that misses the bed smashes on the road, or runs, floats or rolls away. Balloons are also popped or knocked off by brambles and low bridges, and a rival's piece landing on your cab can knock one of yours loose. Driving into a lane that the hurdle blocks is the usual way to lose one.

How do I get three stars?

Stars come from three things added together: your finishing place, how much of your own load you delivered, and your best combo. Finish first with every piece still in the bed and a long combo and you'll get all three. You keep the most stars you've won on a level.

What do the rivals do?

Bluebell, Clover and Peony race you to the finish arch. When you are a little way behind one, it drops cargo back towards your truck. Catch it in the bed for bonus points and it joins your load, or steer out of the way. One that lands on your cab knocks a piece of your own cargo loose.

What is the difference between the hurdles?

Humps toss a piece or two. Logs slow you and toss two. Potholes tip the truck to the side of the wheel that drops in. Ramps make you fly for bonus points and toss on landing. Mud slows you right down. Gusts throw the lightest piece back. Road works leave one lane open between cones. Brambles and low bridges only appear when you carry balloons, because they pop or knock off the balloons.

How do I unlock the other levels and the long haul?

Finish a level to open the next one. Finishing the last level of Orchard Lane opens the long haul, the weathervane at the end of the windmills.

How do I get coins, and what can I buy?

You earn coins on every run, even one that ends early: a share of your score, plus ten per star on a finish and a bonus for a perfect delivery. In the garage you can buy three levels each of Bigger Bed, Soft Springs, Better Grip and Net Rail, and eight paint jobs. Open the garage from the title screen, or from the corner button on the level select.

What does each upgrade do?

The Bigger Bed widens the area in which a piece counts as caught and lets a restock fill the bed with one more piece for each level. Soft Springs cut how much bumps jolt your cargo. Better Grip keeps your steering sharp and your speed up on grass and in mud. The Net Rail catches pieces that land just beside the bed and adds a net you can see on the truck.

What is slow motion for?

When you make a big save, such as a catch right at the edge of the bed or one the bed only just reached, time slows for a moment so you can see it. It is just for show and it doesn't change your score.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Drag anywhere on the screen to steer, or hold the left or right side, and use the GAS and BRAKE pedals at the bottom corners. The pause button is just under the site's close button at the top right. On a computer, use A and D or the arrow keys to steer and W and S for the gas and brake.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your stars and scores, your coins, upgrades and paint, your furthest long haul and your sound setting are kept in this browser on Unihfy Games. Clearing your browser data removes them.
