Play Loftwind • Free

A calm, side-on hot-air balloon race at golden hour. You can't steer a balloon, only change its height: hold to fire the burner and rise, let go and the air cools so you sink. Every band of sky has its own wind, some blowing forwards, some backwards, so you steer by climbing or sinking into the one that carries you where you need to go. Fly through the ring gates in order, cross the finish line and try to beat the rival balloons and the par time. Thirty courses across five chapters, each one flown by a planner to prove it can be finished.

Genre: Racing

Difficulty: Calm to start, tricky to master

About Loftwind

Thirty courses in five chapters

The courses are grouped into Barley Rise, Turnback Vale, Gusty Downs, Veering Skies and Long Crossing, six in each. Each chapter brings in one new idea: calm winds first, then strong winds blowing backwards with rings placed behind earlier ones, then gusts that swell and fade, then winds that change speed and even direction over time, and finally all of them together.

Courses grow from three wind bands and four rings to up to six bands and eight smaller rings, with three to five rival balloons. Finishing a course unlocks the next, and each chapter has its own light, from a golden afternoon to a deep sunset.

Every course can be finished

Each course was flown by a planner using the game's own physics before it was kept, which proves every ring can be reached. Par is the planner's time plus 15 percent, since the planner flies perfectly.

The rival balloons each fly in their own style, some careful and some bold, and their pace is set course by course. On the early courses matching par is usually enough to win; on the later ones, first place takes a run better than par.

Your balloon and your ghost

Stars unlock five more envelope patterns for your balloon, from bands and chevrons to a sunburst and polka dots. Choose one on the Balloon screen.

Your best run on each course is kept and flies alongside you as a faint ghost balloon the next time you race it, so you can see exactly where you gained or lost time.

What the game keeps

Your stars, best time and ghost on each course, your balloon pattern, your sound setting and whether you have seen the how-to are saved on Unihfy Games in this browser.

Your score here is your total number of stars, out of 90.

How to Play

  • Hold to fire the burner and your balloon rises; let go and it slowly sinks. The air takes a moment to heat up and cool down, so the balloon keeps rising for a little while after you let go, and keeps sinking for a little while after you start burning again. Learning to start early is the main skill.
  • The sky is split into bands, each with its own wind. Clouds and streaks drift with the wind in their band, bands blowing backwards have a warm tint, and the gauge on the left edge shows the direction and speed of every band. Rise or sink into the band that takes you where you want to go.
  • Fly through the rings in order; each ring is numbered and the next one glows. If you miss one, nothing is lost but time: find a band that blows backwards, drift back and pass through it. An arrow at the edge of the screen points to the next ring when it's out of view.
  • Touching the ground slows you down for a moment, and the cold clouds at the top push you back down. Neither ends the race.
  • After the last ring, cross the finish line. Your place is decided by the rival balloons, and your stars by your time: three for matching par or better, two for finishing within a fifth of par, and one for any finish.

FAQs

How do I steer the balloon?

You can't steer it directly. You only control its height: hold to rise and let go to sink. Each band of sky has its own wind, so you steer by moving into the band that blows the way you want to go.

Why does the balloon keep rising after I let go?

Like a real hot-air balloon, the air inside takes time to heat up and cool down. Start burning a little before you need to climb, and let go a little before you reach the height you want.

What happens if I miss a ring?

You only lose time. Find a band blowing backwards (it has a warm tint and the gauge shows its arrow pointing back), drift back to the ring and pass through it.

How are stars worked out?

Each course has a par time, set from a planner that flew the course. Finish in par or better for three stars, within a fifth over par for two, and any finish earns one.

What is the faint balloon flying with me?

That's your ghost: a replay of your best run on that course. It appears once you have finished the course at least once.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Loftwind is made for landscape on phones and tablets; if you hold your phone upright the player asks you to turn it sideways. On a computer it works in any window size, with mouse or keyboard.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your stars, best times, ghosts, balloon pattern and sound setting are kept in this browser on Unihfy Games. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Who made Loftwind?

Loftwind was designed and built in-house at Unihfy Games by Kaushik Hirpara. Its code, art and sound are all original, and everything you see and hear is generated by the game itself.
