Play Rootwell • Free

A seed sits just below the surface of a cross-section of soil, and a spring runs far below it. Grow its root one cell at a time and reach the water before your energy runs out. Loam is cheap to push through, clay and gravel cost more, and stones block the way. Damp patches give away hidden water pockets that refill your energy, and golden mineral nodes let a root split in two. Fifty levels, each checked to have a way down, a par to aim for on each, and as many undos as you like.

Genre: Puzzle

Difficulty: Relaxed to start, tricky to master

About Rootwell

Fifty levels in five chapters

The levels are grouped into Topsoil, Clay Beds, Gravel Run, Deep Stone and Spring Line, ten in each. Boards grow from 7 by 10 cells to 9 by 16, with more stone, more water and less spare energy as you go.

The first levels each bring in one idea at a time: plain soil and stones, then clay, gravel, hidden water and finally mineral nodes. A short note at the start of those levels says what is new.

Clearing a level unlocks the next. The level select shows the stars you have on every level, and Continue on the title screen takes you to the next one to clear.

Every level has a way down

Each level was built around a route to the spring that was played through with the game's own rules before the level was kept, so none of them are impossible.

Par is the most energy the level can be finished with, found by a solver that tried every way through. On almost every level the solver searched them all, so par is the best result possible; on the rest it is the best it found, and the game will tell you if you beat it.

Relaxed by design

There is no timer and nothing moves until you do. Undo is unlimited and free, so trying an idea and taking it back is part of the game.

Watch the plant above the ground: it grows taller and leafier the deeper your roots reach, and flowers when the water arrives.

What the game keeps

Your stars and best result on each level, your sound setting and whether you have seen the how-to are saved on Unihfy Games in this browser.

Your score here is your total number of stars, out of 150.

How to Play

  • Your root starts at the seed in the top row. Grow it into a cell directly above, below, left or right of a glowing root tip. The cells you can reach are lightly highlighted, with dots showing what each one costs.
  • Each cell costs energy: loam 1, clay 2 and gravel 3. Stones can't be entered, and a root can never cross itself.
  • Water pockets stay hidden until a root grows right next to them. The soil around a pocket is darker and glints now and then, so look for damp patches. Growing into a pocket refills your energy once.
  • A golden mineral node splits the root. After growing into one, two roots can grow out of it, which lets you reach water off to the side and still carry on down.
  • Reach any cell in the bottom row to tap the spring and finish the level. If no root can afford another cell, you are out of energy: undo as many moves as you like, or restart.
  • Your result is the energy you have left. Match the level's par for three stars, finish with at least half of par for two, and any finish earns one.

FAQs

What is the goal in Rootwell?

Grow the seed's root down to the spring under the bottom row before your energy runs out. The more energy you have left when you get there, the more stars you earn.

How much does each cell cost?

Loam costs 1 energy, clay 2 and gravel 3. Stones can't be entered at all. The dots on each highlighted cell show its cost, and turn red when you can't afford it.

How do I find the hidden water?

Soil near a water pocket looks darker and damper, and catches the light now and then. A pocket appears once a root grows next to it, and growing into it refills your energy once.

How are stars and par worked out?

Par is the most energy a level can be finished with, found by a solver. Finish with par or more for three stars, at least half of par for two, and one star for any finish.

Can every level be solved?

Yes. Every level was built around a route to the spring that was checked with the game's own rules before it was included.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Rootwell is made for portrait on phones and tablets; if you turn your phone sideways the player asks you to turn it back. On a computer it works in any window size, with mouse or keyboard.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your stars, best result on each level and sound setting are kept in this browser on Unihfy Games. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Who made Rootwell?

Rootwell was designed and built in-house at Unihfy Games by Kaushik Hirpara. Its code, art and sound are all original, and everything you see and hear is generated by the game itself.
