Play Spotlight Sprint • Free

A night escape across the city rooftops, seen from the side. Searchlights on towers behind the buildings sweep the roofs, and every moment you spend in a beam fills the alarm. Anything tall between you and a lamp hides you, so the shadows of water tanks, chimneys and hanging sheets are where you want to run, but the shadows are also where the clutter is, while the open, lit rows are clear. Switch between three rows across each roof, jump the gaps between buildings, slide under washing lines, dodge crossing beams and watchtowers that snap from spot to spot, and slip a hunting helicopter. Collect keys for extra points and grab a Smoke Puff or a Fuse Pull to help you along. Your score is the distance you run plus the keys you collect.

Genre: Endless Runner

Difficulty: Easy to start, then faster, with more and sharper searchlights the further you run

About Spotlight Sprint

The searchlights

Sweeping towers swing their beams along the roofs, across the rows or round in a loop. Crossing pairs stand either side of a stretch and sweep their beams towards each other, so they meet in the middle.

Watchtowers stand closer and higher. They hold their beam on one spot, then swing quickly to the next. A dashed ring on the roof shows where a watchtower will swing next, and it firms up just before the swing.

The helicopter

Every so often a HELICOPTER INBOUND warning flashes, and a helicopter flies in from behind and hovers over the roofs. Its beam swings back and forth along the run through your position, and follows you from row to row a little late.

A red dashed band on the roof shows which row its beam is aimed at, and arrows show which way it is drifting. Change row just before the beam reaches you to slip it, or keep something tall between you and the helicopter. After a while it gives up and flies off.

Keys and power-ups

Keys come in trails along a stretch's open row, which is usually in the light, in arcs over units and washing lines to jump for, and in arcs over street gaps. Taking keys quickly one after another plays a rising run of notes.

A Smoke Puff hides you in a cloud for 4.5 seconds. While it lasts, the beams can't see you, so the alarm can't rise.

A Fuse Pull cuts the power to the searchlight towers from just behind you to 60 m ahead. They flicker out and stay dark. The helicopter has its own power, so it keeps hunting.

The first power-up appears about 140 m into a run, then another every 170 to 260 m, always on open roof between obstacles.

Slipping a beam

Get out of a beam that had you, with the alarm at least half full, and the game calls it out: SLIPPED IT! Slips close together climb in pitch.

Slips are for the thrill only. They do not change your score.

How it gets harder

Your speed rises the further you run. Over the first 3,000 m the alarm fills faster and cools more slowly, and the searchlights come closer together, sweep faster and swing further. They also stand higher and nearer, so the shadows are shorter, and their pools are wider. Crossing pairs and watchtowers become more common, watchtowers hold each spot for less time, and helicopters come more often.

Every run is a new course, laid out in patterns that always leave a way through: tall things never close all three rows too close together to change row between them, and glass never sits where a fair jump comes down.

However far you get, every searchlight can be beaten. No beam moves along the roofs faster than half your running speed, so you always run through a pool rather than carry it with you. A pool never covers all three rows at once, so there is always a row to dodge into. There is always a stretch of dark roof between one tower's reach and the next, and where a helicopter is going to hunt, the towers are few and gentle.

What the game keeps

Your best score, your screen shake and sound settings, how many runs you have played (so the control hints only show on your first couple of runs), and whether you have already seen the helicopter tip are saved on Unihfy Games in this browser.

How to Play

  • Press RUN on the title screen to start. The runner sprints along the rooftops on their own; you choose the row, and when to jump and slide. Every run starts on a stretch of open roof before the first searchlight.
  • Each roof has three rows, from the front edge to the back wall. Move between them to get round clutter and to get into the shadows. Tall things like water tanks, chimneys and antennas can't be jumped, so change row round them. Jump squat air-conditioning units, or land on top and run across them. Slide under washing lines, or jump them.
  • Searchlights stand on towers behind the buildings, so the shadow of anything tall falls forward across the roof towards you. While a beam is on you, the alarm meter at the top of the screen fills, and two beams at once fill it faster. The game checks your legs and hips, so get them into a shadow and you are hidden, even if your head is still in the light.
  • Once you are hidden, the alarm holds for a moment (a thin inner arc fills on the meter), then starts to cool. The word under the meter tells you where you stand: IN THE LIGHT, HIDDEN or COOLING. When the meter is full, you are spotted, every beam swings onto you and the run is over.
  • Knocking into things is noisy. Running into a unit makes you stumble up and over it, glancing off something tall bounces you into the next row, a washing line tangles you for a second, and landing on a skylight cracks the glass. Every knock slows you down and adds to the alarm. Running across a skylight is fine; only landing on one cracks it.
  • Mind the gaps between buildings. Narrow alleys may step up to a slightly higher roof, wide street gaps are level or drop down, and some buildings share a wall with a drop or a short ledge. A ledge just above your feet can be scrambled up, noisily. Fall into a gap, or hit the wall of the next building too low to climb, and the run ends.
  • Collect keys along the way: each one adds 25 to your score. Your score is the metres you have run plus 25 for every key, and your best is kept.

FAQs

What is the goal in Spotlight Sprint?

Run as far across the rooftops as you can without being spotted. Your score is the metres you run plus 25 points for every key you collect. The run ends if the alarm fills, if you fall into a gap, or if you hit a wall too high to climb.

How do I hide from the searchlights?

Keep something tall, like a water tank, a chimney or a hanging sheet, between you and the lamp. Its shadow on the roof shows where you are hidden. The game checks your legs and hips, so your lower body needs to be in the shadow.

Why did the alarm jump when I wasn't in a beam?

Knocking into something makes a noise, and noise adds to the alarm. Running into units, chimneys, tanks, antennas or washing lines, landing on a skylight or scrambling up a ledge all raise it a little and slow you down.

How long can I stay in a beam?

At the start of a run, about two seconds in one beam fills an empty alarm, and the further you run the quicker it fills, down to a little over a second. Two beams on you fill it faster. Once you are hidden the alarm holds for a moment, then cools, and it cools more slowly later in a run, so it pays to stay in the shadows for a while after a close call.

How do I get away from the helicopter?

Watch the red dashed band on the roof: it shows which row the beam is aimed at, and the beam follows your row a little late. Change row just before the beam swings over you, or get something tall between you and the helicopter. It leaves after a while.

How do I change rows on a phone?

Swipe up to move one row back, towards the far wall, and swipe down to move one row forward. Tap to jump and swipe right to slide.

What do the power-ups do?

A Smoke Puff hides you completely for 4.5 seconds. A Fuse Pull cuts the searchlight towers on the stretch ahead, but not the helicopter.

Does SLIPPED IT! give extra points?

No. It is called out when you escape a beam with the alarm high, but your score is only distance and keys.

How do I pause or change the settings?

Press Esc or P, or tap the pause button at the top right. The pause screen shows your run so far and has Resume, Settings and Menu. On the title screen, the Settings window opens the same settings for screen shake and sound.

Is my best score saved?

Yes. Your best score and settings are kept in this browser on Unihfy Games, and NEW BEST lights up on the game over screen when you beat it. Clearing your browser data removes them.
