A car racing game where fuel is weight. Before every race you choose how many pit stops to make and how much fuel to carry: a full tank keeps you out of the pits but makes the car heavy, slow to accelerate and keen to slide wide, while a light tank is quick through the corners but has to come in and refuel. Race five rivals from a standing start, last on the grid, on 25 circuits spread over five cups, from the Coastline to the night streets of Neon City. Score championship points in every race, win trophies, earn coins and spend them on five more cars in the garage, each with its own speed, grip and appetite for fuel. Drive from behind the car or from the cockpit, drift through the tight bends with a tap of the brake, and watch the track map to see where your rivals are.

Genre: Racing

Difficulty: Moderate to start, with quicker rivals in every cup

About Torque Rush

Fuel is weight

Every car gets heavier as you fill it. A full tank makes it slower off the line, slower to stop and lower at top speed, and it costs grip in the corners. As the race goes on and the fuel burns away, the car gets quicker lap by lap.

Every race needs at least one stop, because a full tank never lasts the whole distance. One stop means a heavy car for longer stints; two stops mean a light car but another trip down the pit lane. On some circuits one stop is faster, on others two, and each car prefers a different plan.

Five cups, twenty-five circuits

The Coastline Cup runs past harbours, lighthouses and beaches. Vineyard Hills climbs through vines and olive groves. Red Canyon winds between mesas and cactus. The Alpine Pass climbs through snow and pines to the switchbacks at the summit. Neon City is raced at night, under street lights and lit-up towers.

Races last three or five laps, about four to five minutes each. The rivals get quicker cup by cup and race by race, so by Neon City you will need a better car as well as a better line.

The rivals

Ines Marlow, Teo Varga, Rosa Quill, Bram Okafor and Juno Hale race the same cars and the same fuel rules as you. They brake for the corners, take a racing line, pass slower cars on the side with more room and plan their own pit stops, some on one stop and some on two.

The grid for each race is set by the championship table, with the leader on pole and you at the back, so every race is a climb through the field.

The garage

The garage is a weighbridge. Each car rolls onto the scale, the needle shows its weight empty and with a full tank, and a weigh slip prints out with its top speed, grip, brakes and fuel use. Stamp the slip to buy the car or to drive it.

There are six cars. The Sparrow is free and balanced. The Lapwing uses less fuel and carries a full tank well. The Gannet grips hard when it is light but struggles when full, so it suits two stops. The Swiftlet has the best grip and brakes for its price. The Goshawk is fast and carries its fuel well. The Nightjar is the quickest of all, and light on fuel too.

Coins and trophies

Every finish pays coins: more for a better place and more in the later cups. A trophy at the end of a cup adds a bonus. One run through all five cups earns enough for about one of the faster cars, so racing a cup again for a better trophy also fills the garage.

After each race a timing sheet prints the results, then the championship table goes up on the board. At the end of a cup the top three stand on the podium.

How to Play

  • Pick a cup and a race in the Road Atlas, an open book with one map for each cup. A cup is five races, played in order, and you can stop between races and carry on later.
  • Before each race the fuel plan asks two things: how many pit stops to make, from none to two, and how much fuel to start each stint with. Choosing the stops suggests a load that will last the longest stint; you can add or take away fuel in 5% steps. The plan shows your top speed and grip with that load, how many laps it lasts and roughly what each stop costs.
  • You start last of six. Tap the screen or press Up to start the lights, and go when they turn green. Hold GAS to accelerate, steer with the arrows and brake before the bends. Too fast into a corner and the car slides wide and loses speed, more so with a heavy tank.
  • When the fuel runs low, take the pit lane on the right of the final straight. The lane has a speed limit, and the crew fills the tank while you wait in your box. A light tank means more stops; a heavy one means a slower car. Getting that balance right is what wins races.
  • Tap the brake while you are steering hard through a fast bend and the tail swings out into a drift. Keep steering into the bend to hold it, and straighten up to end it. A drift carries more speed through tight corners than sliding wide, and it works best with a light tank.
  • Finish in the points to climb the championship table: 10 for a win, then 7, 5, 3, 2 and 1. After the fifth race, a top-three place wins a trophy and opens the next cup. Every finish pays coins, which buy faster cars in the garage.

FAQs

How much fuel should I carry?

Start with the load the fuel plan suggests: choosing the number of stops sets a load that lasts the longest stint. Carry less and you will be quicker but may run dry; carry more and you are safe but slower. The plan shows how many laps your load lasts and what each stop costs.

One stop or two?

It depends on the circuit and the car. One stop saves a trip down the pit lane but means a heavy car for longer. Two stops keep the car light. Try both: on some circuits two stops wins, and cars like the Gannet are built for it.

How do I pit?

Move to the right of the final straight and drive into the pit lane. The speed limiter slows you down, the car stops in its box and the crew refuels it. When the tank is full enough to finish, you are off again.

How do I drift?

Above about 80 km/h, steer hard into a bend and tap the brake. The tail swings out and the car keeps turning in. Keep steering into the bend to hold the drift; let go of the steering or steer the other way to end it. Holding the brake for longer just brakes.

How do I open the next cup?

Finish the cup's championship in the top three. Points are 10, 7, 5, 3, 2 and 1 for first to sixth across the five races.

How do I get new cars?

Every finish pays coins, and a trophy adds a bonus. Open the garage from the car key on the atlas desk, roll the car you want onto the weighbridge and stamp the slip to buy it. You can switch between the cars you own at any time.

Why am I sliding off in the corners?

You are going too fast for the bend, or carrying too much fuel. Brake earlier, before you turn in, and watch the grip gauge: it turns red when the tyres are past their limit. A lighter tank gives you more grip.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes, in landscape. Steer with the two arrow buttons on the left and use the GAS and BRAKE pedals on the right. On a computer you can use the arrow keys or W, A, S and D.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your trophies, coins, cars, a cup in progress and your settings are kept in this browser on Unihfy Games. Clearing your browser data removes them.
