How to Play

  • Start by selecting your difficulty level: Easy (4 dots), Medium (5 dots), or Hard (6 dots)
  • Choose a game mode: Practice for unlimited attempts, Challenge for limited attempts, or Countdown for time pressure
  • Click or tap on the first dot to begin your pattern
  • Continue clicking adjacent dots to create your pattern sequence
  • Submit your guess when you've completed your pattern
  • Review the feedback: filled circles (●) mean correct dot in correct position, empty circles (○) mean correct dot in wrong position
  • Use the feedback to deduce the correct pattern in your next attempt
  • In Challenge mode, you have limited attempts to solve the pattern
  • In Countdown mode, race against the clock to solve as many patterns as possible
  • Try to solve the pattern in the fewest attempts possible for a better score
  • Progress through increasingly difficult patterns as you improve

FAQs

How do I interpret the feedback after each guess?

After each attempt, you'll see circles next to your guess. A filled circle (●) means you have a dot that exists in the pattern AND is in the correct position. An empty circle (○) means you have a dot that exists in the pattern but is in the WRONG position. Use this feedback to eliminate incorrect combinations and narrow down the solution.

Why does the game use a terminal-style visual design?

It's a deliberate aesthetic choice to reinforce the code-breaking theme - the filled and empty circle feedback reads like a hacking console rather than a typical casual puzzle interface, which fits a game about deducing a hidden sequence.

How many dots do I need to connect in each difficulty?

Easy difficulty uses 4 dots in the pattern, Medium uses 5 dots, and Hard uses 6 dots. More dots mean more possible combinations, making the puzzle increasingly difficult to solve.

Do I need an internet connection to play BreakLock?

To open it, yes. BreakLock is not saved onto your device, so it has to be fetched from the web each time you visit. After that the deduction happens entirely in your browser - the code you are hunting for is generated locally and checked locally, so nothing you do is being sent anywhere and a lost connection mid-puzzle changes nothing.

Is there a strategy for solving patterns faster?

Start by trying different combinations to identify which dots are in the pattern at all. Once you know which dots are included, focus on finding their correct positions. Avoid repeating the same guess, and use the feedback systematically to eliminate possibilities rather than guessing randomly.

Does the game work on both mobile and desktop?

Yes. Dots are selected by clicking or tapping and the menu buttons behave the same either way, so there is no separate mobile control scheme to learn. The board is laid out for portrait, which suits a phone better than a wide desktop window.

How are patterns generated - are they random?

Yes, patterns are randomly generated for each game, ensuring that you'll never encounter the exact same puzzle twice. This keeps the game fresh and challenging, requiring you to use logic and deduction each time rather than memorizing solutions.
